Plan Your First Visit

Welcome – we are thrilled to welcome you to The Wild Vet! We want to ensure that your first visit goes as smoothly as possible, so there are a few things you can do to ensure we get to know your pet better.

Whether you have a dog, cat, bird, reptile, rabbit, rodent, ferret, amphibian or fish, our experienced team is here to provide a comfortable and stress-free experience.

Streamline Your Visit

To make the most of your initial consultation, we recommend the following preparations:

  • Medical Records: if your pet has any previous medical records, including vaccination history and past treatments, please bring them along, or provide your previous vet’s details well in advance so that we can arrange for them to be sent over.
  • History Questions: to streamline the consultation, please fill in the relevant history questionnaire for your pet by clicking here.
  • Diet, Medications and Parasite Prevention: please bring any current medications, and detailed records of parasite prevention, supplements and diet. Pictures of the products used are helpful too!
  • Videos and/or Pictures of the Health Concern: if you are visiting us with an unwell pet, please bring pictures and/or videos of the problem or concern, e.g. a video of limping, picture of vomit, video of coughing. This helps our vets assess your pet if the concern isn’t repeated in the consultation.
  • Withholding Food: If your pet has a health concern which may need sedation or anaesthesia for diagnostic testing and/or treatment, please ask one of our friendly staff members (as far in advance as possible) if it is appropriate to withhold food (and for how long).
  • Transportation: Ensure your pet is safely and comfortably transported on a leash, or in a secure carrier or enclosure.
  • Time: please allow extra time during your consultation if your pet requires diagnostics. During your first visit, we take the time to review their medical history and answer any questions/concerns you might have.

What to Bring

  • Dogs & Cats: if your pet is on a special diet, please bring some treats which they are able to eat!
  • Exotic Pets:
      • Aquatic Species: please bring a sample of their water in a separate container to the one they are being transported in.
      • Birds & Reptiles: please being in a fresh faecal sample. For birds, we recommend lining the bottom of the transport cage with clingwrap so we can collect fresh faecal samples.
      • Companions: if your pet has a bonded companion animal, please bring them along to help minimise stress.
      • Pictures of their Enclosure: pictures of enclosures assist us in making husbandry recommendations

During the Consultation

  • Checking in: upon arrival, one of our friendly receptionists will greet you and check you in. We’ll check that any necessary information, including the completed husbandry questionnaire and previous veterinary history have been uploaded to the file.
  • Nurse History: a nurse will bring you through to a consultation room and weigh your pet, and collect their vitals (species-dependent). For young pet consults, the nurse may also review husbandry, diet, and grooming with you.
  • Physical Examination: the veterinarian will then perform a thorough physical examination, assessing their overall health, including body condition, eyes, ears, mouth, skin, joints and more.
  • Diagnostic Testing: based on the history and physical examination, we may recommend diagnostic tests such as blood, urine and/or faecal testing, microscopy, x-rays, or ultrasound. The cost is always discussed upfront to ensure that the bill stays within your budget!
  • Recommendations: we’ll provide guidance and make recommendations about diet, enrichment, husbandry, vaccinations, parasite prevention and more. If any health issues are identified during the consultation, we’ll discuss treatment options.
  • Treatment: treatment will be administered to your pet once we have decided on your chosen treatment plan.

After the Consultation

At the end of your visit, the consultation nurse will instruct you on how to administer any medications dispensed, and answer any last minute questions about your pet’s treatment plan.

For unwell pets, we will also follow up after the consultation to ensure your pet’s symptoms have improved or resolved.
