How Often Should My Guinea Pig See the Vet?
We recommend a health check every 6 months for most guinea pigs, with more frequent check-ups for senior guinea pigs or those with ongoing health conditions. Guinea pigs can be very good at hiding signs of illness, so subtle changes in appetite, weight, behaviour, toileting or activity can sometimes be the first indication that something is wrong.
During a routine health check, your vet will assess your guinea pig’s weight and body condition, teeth and mouth, eyes, ears, skin and coat, heart, lungs and abdomen, as well as discussing their diet and husbandry. Regular examinations can help identify problems such as dental disease, weight loss, skin conditions, urinary disease and age-related changes before they become more advanced.
If your guinea pig stops eating, has difficulty breathing, becomes very lethargic, has difficulty passing urine or develops another sudden change in their condition, they should be assessed promptly rather than waiting for their next routine health check.
