dog parasite prevention in sydney

Protecting your dog against fleas, ticks, heartworm and intestinal worms is an important part of preventative healthcare. Some parasites cause skin irritation or gastrointestinal illness, while others can be life-threatening or transmitted to people.

At The Wild Vet in Glebe, we help dog owners choose effective, practical parasite prevention programmes suited to their dog’s age, lifestyle and individual risks. We’re open 7 days a week and provide preventative veterinary care for dogs throughout Sydney’s Inner West.

What Parasites Do Dogs Need Protection Against?

Fleas

Fleas can cause intense itching, skin infections and flea allergy dermatitis. Dogs can also develop tapeworm infections by swallowing infected fleas while grooming.

Fleas remain active in Sydney throughout the year, particularly in warm indoor environments. Regular prevention is more effective than waiting until fleas become visible.

Ticks

Paralysis ticks are a serious concern for dogs in Sydney and coastal NSW. Their toxin can cause weakness, difficulty breathing and potentially fatal paralysis.

Dogs can encounter ticks in gardens, parks and bushland. Even dogs receiving regular tick prevention should be checked daily, particularly after visiting areas with vegetation.

Heartworm

Heartworm is transmitted through mosquito bites. Adult worms develop within the blood vessels supplying the lungs and can cause serious heart and lung disease.

Infected dogs may initially show no symptoms. As the disease progresses, coughing, exercise intolerance, breathing difficulties and heart failure can develop.

Heartworm prevention is particularly important because treating an established infection is more complicated and carries greater risks than preventing infection.

Intestinal Worms

Dogs can become infected with intestinal parasites through contaminated soil, faeces, fleas, prey animals and other environmental sources.

The main intestinal worms include:

  • Roundworms: Can cause gastrointestinal illness, particularly in puppies, and may infect humans.

  • Hookworms: Feed on blood and can cause anaemia, diarrhoea and weakness.

  • Whipworms: Can cause large-bowel diarrhoea, weight loss and chronic intestinal inflammation.

  • Tapeworms: Include flea tapeworm, Taenia species and hydatid tapeworm, which poses a significant human health risk.

Not every intestinal worming product treats tapeworms, so it’s important to check which parasites are covered.

Our Recommended Parasite Prevention

At The Wild Vet, we recommend combining long-acting heartworm prevention with regular flea, tick and intestinal worm treatments.

Treatment Protects Against Frequency
SR-12 Heartworm Injection Heartworm disease Every 12 months in adult dogs
Bravecto Oral Chew Fleas and ticks Every 3 months
Milpro Roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and tapeworms Every 3 months in adult dogs

Our recommended programme provides broad parasite protection with fewer treatments throughout the year. Monthly chews require more frequent administration, increasing the likelihood of missed or delayed doses and potential gaps in protection. Additionally, not all monthly combination products protect against every intestinal parasite, particularly tapeworms.

Puppies require a different treatment schedule, with more frequent intestinal worming and age-appropriate heartworm, flea and tick prevention as they grow.

Annual Heartworm Injection (SR-12)

The SR-12 injection provides long-acting heartworm prevention and can be scheduled alongside your dog’s annual health check or vaccination appointment.

This removes the need to remember monthly heartworm treatments and helps reduce the risk of missed doses.

Dogs with an unknown or interrupted heartworm prevention history may require testing before commencing or restarting treatment. Puppies require a different initial dosing schedule.

Bravecto Flea & Tick Prevention

At The Wild Vet, we recommend Bravecto oral chews for long-lasting protection against fleas and ticks, including paralysis ticks.

Each chew provides up to 12 weeks of protection, reducing the need for monthly treatments and making ongoing parasite prevention more convenient for owners.

Regular treatment is important throughout the year, particularly in Sydney, where paralysis ticks can pose a serious threat to dogs.

Milpro Intestinal Worming

Milpro treats common intestinal worms, including roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and tapeworms.

For most adult dogs, we recommend intestinal worming every three months. More frequent treatment may be necessary for dogs that hunt, scavenge, consume raw offal or have an increased risk of hydatid tapeworm exposure.

Is There an All-in-One Monthly Parasite Treatment?

For owners who prefer a single monthly treatment, Advocate Ultra Chew is an alternative that covers fleas, ticks, heartworm and several important intestinal worms, including tapeworms.

Unlike some older monthly combination products, Advocate Ultra Chew contains praziquantel, which provides treatment against tapeworms, including hydatid tapeworm.

Although our preferred approach is long-acting heartworm prevention combined with Bravecto and Milpro, we can help owners choose an appropriate monthly alternative when preferred.

Parasite Prevention for Puppies

Puppies require a different parasite prevention schedule to adult dogs, with more frequent intestinal worming and treatments appropriate for their age and weight.

At The Wild Vet, we recommend the following preventative treatment schedule for puppies.

Intestinal Worming

Puppies require more frequent intestinal worming during their first six months of life before transitioning to three-monthly treatments.

Age Worming Frequency
2–12 weeks Every 2 weeks
3–6 months Monthly
Over 6 months Every 3 months

Flea & Tick Prevention

Bravecto oral chews can be started from 8 weeks of age in puppies weighing at least 2 kg. Younger puppies may require alternative flea prevention and individual advice regarding tick protection.

Age Flea/Tick Treatment Frequency
Under 8 weeks Age-appropriate flea prevention; tick prevention as advised by your veterinarian
From 8 weeks First Bravecto oral chew (minimum 2 kg)
Every 3 months thereafter Repeat Bravecto oral chew

Heartworm Prevention

Puppies require an initial series of SR-12 injections before transitioning to annual heartworm prevention.

Age Heartworm Prevention
Under 12 weeks Age-appropriate heartworm prevention
12 weeks First SR-12 heartworm injection
6 months Second SR-12 heartworm injection
15 months Third SR-12 injection, alongside annual vaccinations
Every 12 months thereafter Annual SR-12 heartworm injection

Following the initial puppy schedule, annual SR-12 injections can be coordinated with routine vaccinations and health checks.

Our veterinary team can help establish a parasite prevention schedule suited to your puppy’s age, weight and individual needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do indoor dogs need parasite prevention?

Yes. Mosquitoes can enter homes, fleas can be introduced by other animals, and dogs can encounter parasites during even brief outdoor activities. Indoor living reduces some risks but does not eliminate them.

Do dogs need parasite prevention in winter?

Yes. Sydney’s relatively mild climate means parasites can remain active throughout the year. We recommend maintaining protection rather than stopping treatment during cooler months.

Does NexGard Spectra treat everything?

No. NexGard Spectra covers several important parasites, including fleas, ticks, heartworm, roundworms, hookworms and whipworms, but it does not treat tapeworm infections.

Dogs receiving NexGard Spectra may therefore require an additional tapeworm treatment. Advocate Ultra Chew is a newer monthly alternative that includes tapeworm coverage.

Can I give flea, tick and worm treatments together?

Many parasite prevention products can be administered together when used appropriately. However, some products contain overlapping active ingredients, so it’s important to check compatibility before combining treatments.

What happens if my dog misses a heartworm treatment?

Contact your veterinarian for advice. Depending on the duration of the interruption, your dog may require heartworm testing and an adjusted prevention schedule.
